Overview
The Jackson Symphony Orchestra
  • Is in its 46th Season of providing music programs to the citizens of West Tennessee

  • The orchestra and affiliated ensembles perform for a total audience of over 30,000 annually

  • Has a budget of over $700,000

  • Employs 65-70 musicians from throughout the region to perform in 13 annual full-orchestra performances, including the seven concert subscription series

  • Presents internationally known guest artists and provides performance opportunities for aspiring young soloists

  • Has received funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission since 1968


Education
  • Introduces thousands of young people to classical music and the orchestra through entertaining and educational school concerts

  • Sponsors the Sinfonia Strings, under the direction of Tricia Wilburn, which provides young string players with their first ensemble experience

  • Sponsors the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Weimer which provides intermediate and advanced student musicians an opportunity for a full orchestra performance experience

  • Provides  The Touring Brass Quintet which presents workshops free of charge to over 3,000 students each year

  • Provides a group viola class at the Jackson Boys and Girls Club

  • Presents an annual TubaChristmas workshop and performance

  • Supports the Jackson Symphony League's Color of Music program

  • Offer private string instruction with Tricia Wilburn and Erin Womack

  • Offers a week-long summer music camp at Union University

  • Offers scholarships through the Alto Davis Scholarship Fund and the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra to young musicians

  • Created the Endangered Instrument Program in 2004 which offers free private lessons to students who play the oboe, bassoon, or French horn


Community Outreach
  • Presents an annual free outdoor summer Starlight Symphony concert that attracts an audience of 6,000 patrons

  • Presents free Christmas Gifts to the Community Concerts at First Baptist Church

  • Provides a Piano Trio that performs a series of Recitals for Seniors programs at Senior Centers throughout the region


Recordings
  • Has recorded and released a CD and cassette of Handel's Messiah with the Union University Singers and Festival Singers
