COLOR OF MUSIC

The Color of Music, an art contest for grades K-8, is an educational project presented by the Jackson Symphony League and is currently underwritten by Macy’s and Aeneas Internet and Telephone.

Now in its 18th year, the project will be conducted in classrooms of participating schools in Crockett, Gibson, Haywood, Madison and Weakley counties. This will include public, private and home school groups. Nearly 7,000 students will listen to and visually interpret selections by famous composers.  Each school that participates will select entries to represent their school based on their total number of participants. Three hundred and thirteen entries will be sent to the Symphony League for the final judging. From these Finalist, four top awards will be chosen and receive a cash prize, along with forty-five blue ribbon and eighteen honorable mention winners. The schools with the highest percentage of prize-winning entries will receive the Jackson Symphony Award as well as a cash prize.

The goals for the project are:
To provide an opportunity for listening to and visually interpreting classical music
To increase awareness of the Jackson Symphony
To encourage appreciation of symphonic music by young people

The Color of Music is a successful program for the children of West Tennessee due to the dedication of these fine teachers.
