Youth Orchestras

The Jackson Symphony is committed to providing quality educational opportunities for young musicians in West Tennessee. The youth orchestras challenge students to develop their musical skills to their fullest potential.

Sinfonia Strings was founded in 1998 by the Jackson Symphony’s Principal Violist, Margaret Thomas. The orchestra, under the direction of Tricia Wilburn, offers an outstanding ensemble experience for young string players. The orchestra rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 PM at Union University, and performs several times during the year.  Membership is open to string students who have attained enough facility on their instrument to perform level 2-3 string orchestra music.

The Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra, now in its seventh year, rehearses Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 8:15 PM at Union University's Jennings Hall.  Elizabeth Weimer leads this group of talented youth.  The orchestra will present three concerts during the 2005-2006 season, and also take a trip.  The Youth Orchestra will host "Fiddlin' for Funds" at Davis-Kidd Booksellers Tuesday, November 8, 2005, performing solos and in small ensembles throughout the evening.

Musicians from the Jackson Symphony Orchestra often join the students in practices or lead sectional rehearsals.  Members of the Jackson Symphony youth orchestras are admitted free to all Jackson Symphony classical concerts. There is a small  annual registration fee for each orchestra.

The second annual Concerto Competition was held Saturday, October 29th at Hartley Recital Hall, Union University.  Winners of this year's competition are:  Ellen Appleton and Paige Tang, violins, and Philip Tang, cello.

All students wishing to participate in the Jackson Symphony youth orchestras must audition.

Auditions for the 2006-7 Youth Orchestra are scheduled for Saturday, July 22 (woodwinds and brass) and Saturday, July 29th (strings and percussion). For audition information and a registration form, click here.  For further information, phone the Symphony office at 731-427-6440.
