The Color of Music art contest is an educational project presented by the Jackson Symphony League and sponsored by The Macy's Fund of the Federated Department Stores Foundation and Aeneas Internet and Telephone.  Educators in the Jackson-Madison County, McNairy, Gibson, Hardeman and Weakley County School Systems are invited to participate: public, private, parochial, home schools and Special Education programs comparable to grade levels K through 8 are eligible.  Last year over 7,600 students participated.

The goals of the contest include the following:

  • to provide a learning experience which teaches about relationships between art and music
  • to provide an opportunity for listening to and visually interpreting classical music,
  • to increase awareness of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and
  • to encourage a lifelong appreciation of symphonic music by young people.

The students this year will visually interpret Jupiter (from The Planets), by Gustav Holst and Igor Stravinsky's Finale (from the ballet Firebird)All finalist entries selected will be exhibited at the Carl Perkins Civic Center  in conjunction with the Jackson Symphony’s Exploring Melody school concerts, March 9th, and the March classical concert on March 10th.  Additionally, the top winners will be exhibited at the Old Hickory Mall on March 12th - 17th.

From the finalists entries, forty-five Blue Ribbon and four top winners will be selected, plus additional Honorable Mention prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

After the artwork has been completed by the students and turned in, the teacher may want to give the title, composer and background of the two musical selections.  This is especially true this year, since the titles of the works are so suggestive of content for the artwork.  Please keep in mind how very important it is that your students' pictures be drawn from their own imagination!
